Provincial Golf Tournaments

The EL Masonic Golf Society arranges a number of competitions during the summer months of each year. These include an Invitation Day, a Knockout, a Turkey Shoot and the principal competition of the year, which is for the Derby Cup. This Trophy is presented to the winner by the PGM at the annual meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge.

The following dates and venues have been arranged for this year:-

Invitation Day: Knott End Golf Club, Tuesday 24th May, £35 (golf and dinner) FORM

The Derby Cup: Accrington & District Golf Club, Wednesday 20th July, £40 (golf and dinner) FORM
The Derby Cup is open to all East Lancashire Masons

The Jimmy Hemsley Salver and AGM: Breightmet Golf Club,    Friday 14th October, £25 (golf and brunch) FORM

The Arthur Axford Trophy to be played as usual over the summer months . FORM

Please note that the it has been agreed that players may invite non-masons and masons from other Provinces to take part. These guests will compete for a separate trophy.

The East Lancashire Masonic Golf Society held their Premier Golf Competition of the year on Wednesday 15th July at a new venue of Blackley Golf Club

On yet again a fine sunny day.

42 East Lancs Masons took part in the competition which is open to all East Lancs Masons who are members of a golf club and have a current handicap.

RWy Bro Paul Rink was the leader in the clubhouse with 37 Stableford points for some time until in came WBro Harold Cooper with 38 points to win the cup.

In the evening the Brethren were joined for dinner by the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master RWy Bro Sir David Trippier, who was warmly welcomed by all present and also joined by Peter Holden Captain of Blackley Golf Club who welcomed all the Brethren.

The Chairman of the Society WBro Malcolm Worsley welcomed the Provincial Grand Master and the Captain of Blackley Golf Club and complimented him on the condition of the course and the staff for looking after us all so well. He also thanked WBro Gerry Hodson and WBro Richard Zoltie for their sterling work in organising the event.

Sir David then addressed few observations to the brethren before presenting the prizes. Harold Cooper of Corinthian Lodge No. 221 will receive the Cup at the Provincial Grand Lodge meeting in November, together with the Worshipful Master of his Lodge.

The next event for the Society will be at Breightmet Golf Club a 9 hole competition followed by a heart Brunch and the Annual General Meeting.


The East Lancashire Masonic Golf Society Derby Cup Tuesday 8th July 2014 Leigh Golf Club

The East Lancashire Masonic Golf Society held their Premier Golf Competition of the year on Tuesday 8th July.  Thirty Two Brethren attended Leigh Golf Club, on a very hot sunny afternoon.

The Captain of Leigh Golf Club David Rowland welcomed the Society members on arrival and played in the competition with our Chairman Malcolm Worsley and John Parkinson.  David is a West Lancashire Mason and a member of Valour Lodge No. 4322, in Leigh.

In the evening the Brethren were joined for dinner by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master   VWBro Derek Thornhill, who was warmly welcomed by the members.  The Provincial Grand Master RWBro Sir David Trippier and Past Provincial Grand Master RWBro Paul Rink sent their apologies, due to other commitments.
The Chairman of the Society WBro Malcolm Worsley welcomed the Deputy Provincial Grand Master and the Captain of Leigh Golf Club, thanking David Rowland for his donated  prize, a round of golf for four members of the Society.

The East Lancashire Masonic Golf Society held their Premier Golf Competition of the year on Tuesday 9th July.  Thirty Nine Brethren attended Leigh Golf Club, on a very hot sunny afternoon; the conditions were somewhat different to last year’s competition when the weather was very wet and cold.

In the evening the Brethren were joined for dinner by the President of the Society, the Provincial Grand Master, RWBro Sir David Trippier.  The Provincial Grand Master and Past Provincial Grand Master RWBro Paul Rink (member of the Society), were warmly welcomed by the Chairman of the Society WBro Malcolm Worsley, Past Assistant Provincial Grand Master.  Unfortunately the Captain of Leigh Golf Club Mr Tony Roberts was unable to join the Society for dinner due to a family commitment, though he kindly donated a dozen golf balls as a team prize for the best team score.
The Chairman of the Society WBro Malcolm Worsley paid tribute to WBro Alan Banks the Secretary of the Society and the winner of the Derby Cup in 2012 for his contribution to the Society.  Sadly Alan was unable to defend the trophy this year due to illness.  The members of the Society and the Provincial Grand Master send Alan their very best wishes.
The winner of the Derby Cup for 2013 was WBro Peter Tonge of Crescent Lodge of Good Intent No. 4524, scoring 37 Stableford points, WBro Tonge finished in third place in last year’s competition.  Peter will be presented with the trophy formally by the Provincial Grand Master at the Provincial Grand Lodge meeting in November, together with the Worshipful Master of his Lodge.

In second place scoring 36 points was WBro Martin Green who was also runner-up in last year’s competition and in third place WBro Ed Cheadle with 35 points.  Winners of the team prize scoring 90 points were Worshipful Brothers Ed Cheadle, Bob Lowe and David Hudson.

The East Lancashire Masonic Golf Society Jimmy Hemsley Salver & AGM Friday 5th October 2012 Breightmet Golf Club – Bolton

The East Lancashire Masonic Golf Society held their Annual General Meeting on Friday 5th October.
The format for the day was a 9 hole Singles Stableford Competition, playing for the ‘Jimmy Hemsley Salver’ followed by the famous Breightmet ‘Brunch’ (not good for the Cholesterol levels, but well worth it) and the Annual General Meeting.

Fifteen members took to the course on a very wet morning to compete for the ‘Jimmy Hemsley Salver’ named after our Past Provincial Grand Master, RWBro James Hemsley, a keen golfer and a playing member of the Society over many years.  After 9 holes, the winner of this year’s competition was none other than Mr Breightmet Golf Club himself, WBro Harold Cooper.  Harold a member of the Club and a great supporter of the Society is responsible for our annual visit to Breightmet, which is greatly appreciated by the members.

After Brunch the Chairman of the Society WBro Malcolm Worsley opened the meeting.  In his opening remarks, he gave apologies from the Society Secretary WBro Alan Banks.  Malcolm thanked Alan for his continued support and hard work in administrating the running of the Society, a roll which he has carried out for many years.  In Alan’s absence, he then congratulated him on winning the Premier Golf Competition of the year the ‘Derby Cup’. Alan will be presented with the trophy by the Provincial Grand Master at the Provincial meeting in November.

The Chairman acknowledged and thanked WBro Garth Bogle for his sustained support over the past 17 years as Treasurer.  This was Garth’s last AGM as Treasurer, and his last duty was to propose, a £500 donation to the 2015 Festival, which the members unanimously accepted.  The Chairman was delighted to announce that, WBro Richard Zoltie will take over the roll from Garth.
The final presentation was for the Singles Knock out Competition, ‘The Arthur Axford Trophy’.  This year the finalists were; WBro Jack Levene, and WBro Gerry Hodson, the eventual winner for a second consecutive year being WBro Levene.

The East Lancashire Masonic Golf Society held their Premier Golf Competition of the year on Thursday 5th July.  Thirty Five Brethren attended Dukinfield Golf Club, on a dry afternoon, though the course was somewhat wet after the extreme weather conditions of late.

In the evening the Brethren were joined for dinner by the President of the Society, the Provincial Grand Master, RWBro Sir David Trippier, along with the Captain of Dukinfield Golf Club, Mr Eddie Gerrard, who were warmly welcomed by the Chairman of the Society WBro Malcolm Worsley, Past Assistant Provincial Grand Master for Salford.

This being the principal fixture on the Masonic golfing calendar and is open to members of a recognised golf club and who possess a bona fide handicap.  The members were pleased to see our Past Provincial Grand Master, RWBro Paul Rink back playing and supporting the Society; he was also joined by, WBro Martin Caller, Assistant Provincial Grand Master and the Past Assistant Provincial Grand Master Paul Rose, also members of the Society.
The winner of this year’s competition with a score of 37 Stableford points was, WBro Alan Banks.  Alan’s win was well deserved and appreciated by everyone present.  Alan has given dedicated service to the Society and has been the Secretary for the last 10 years.  Alan was presented with the Derby Cup by the President, RWBro Sir David Trippier.

In second place with 35 points was WBro Martin Green and in third place also with 35 points was, WBro Peter Tonge.

The East Lancashire Masonic Golf Society Invitation Day Tuesday 15th May 2012 Knott End Golf

The East Lancashire Masonic Golf Society held their first outing of the new season on Tuesday 15th May.  Fourteen Brethren and their guests attended Knott End Golf Club for the Society’s Annual Invitation Day.
Members and their guests were welcomed by the Chairman of the Society WBro Malcolm Worsley, PSGD, PAPGM and the Club Captain of Knott End Golf Club,  Mr Jim Barr along with the Club President WBro Ian Holmes a member of St. Michael’s on Wyre Lodge, West Lancashire. In blustery conditions accompanied by rain showers and sunshine, the winners of this year’s competition with 44 points Stableford points on a card play-off were WBro Harold Cooper and his guest Michael Horrocks.  In second place was, WBro John Mckenzie and Roy Preston and in third place again with 44 points WBro David Surtees and Peter Sellers. Finally, a special thank you must go to; WBro Alan Banks for his organisation as Secretary of the Society. The next outing is the principal fixture on the East Lancashire Masonic Calendar ‘The Derby Cup’ and is open to all East Lancashire Masons.  This takes place on Thursday 5th July 2012 at Dukinfield Golf Club.  Information available from WBro Alan Banks at: alan.banks2@btinternet.comEntry Form available here.
