The East Lancs Masonic Golf Society held their Premier Golf Competition “The Derby Cup” on
Wednesday 20th July at a new venue of Accrington & District Golf Club

The society received a warm welcome from the club and although the forecast was for thunder and lightning. Just before the first players were to go out the sun came out and all managed to play in back to back sunshine.

Only 33 East Lancs masons took part in the Derby Cup this year compared to 42 last year a very disappointing turn out. But a great days golf, meal and laughter for all 33.

This competition is of course open at ALL East Lancs Masons with a current handicap.

In the evening we were joined for dinner by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master V W Bro Derek Nelson Thornhill who was warmly welcomed by our Chairman W Bro. Malcolm Worsley and all present.

W Bro. Worsley appealed to all present to try to increase our numbers for this Prestigious event by speaking to any masonic contacts they know who play golf to come along and compete next year.

V W Bro Derek Nelson Thornhill addressed the brethren and reminisced about when he used to play this course although not as a member, but in matches between Accrington and  his own club Blackburn.

Derek then went on to present the prizes a very popular and ever present over many years this year’s winner of the Derby Cup was Lawrence Yarwood with 34 points a member of Lodge of Antiquity No 146. who will collect the cup at the Provincial Grand Lodge meeting accompanying the Worshipful Master of the Lodge.

Provincial Golf

The E. L. Masonic Golf Society arranges a number of competitions during the summer months of each year. These include an Invitation Day, a Knockout, a Turkey Shoot and the principal competition of the year, which is for the Derby Cup. This Trophy is presented to the winner by the PGM at the annual meeting of Provincial Grand Lodge. The Derby Cup (named after Lord Derby, Provincial Grand Master 1899 - 1948) began in 1932 and has been played each year with a short break during WWII.

There are over 100 members of the Golf Society (membership is only a small fee each year) and we know of over 200 brethren who become involved in playing in Provincial or District Golf tournaments from time to time. Anyone is welcome to join although the rules for some of our competitions insist that one is a member of a Golf Club and has a recognised handicap.

The Society feels that there are many golfing masons in the Province who may not be fully aware of our activities so if you wish to find out more or want to join please feel free to contact the Interim Secretary:

We believe our golf days offer a healthy way of enjoying fraternal friendship and, apart from the golf, give us the opportunity to raise a little money for Masonic charities. In addition, Invitation Day enables us to invite non-masons to one of functions, and possibly stimulate their interest in Freemasonry.
