Attributes And Skills Required
of the Charity Steward
The Charity Steward has a key role to play in helping to promote the charitable profile and image of Freemasonry in the wider community.
Particular care, therefore, needs to be given to the appointment of a member to this role. Whilst the District Charity Steward will provide training and other support, ideally the appointee should possess the following attributes:
- Enthusiasm for the role and its purpose;
- Communication skills: written, verbal and ideally I.T. and Internet;
- Reliability – you do what you will say you will do;
- Ability to build quality relationships both within and outside the craft;
- Ability to influence others;
- Ability to motivate and inspire others;
- Approachable;
- Empathetic and sensitive to the feelings of others;
- Innovative and open to change;
- Responsive to feedback.
The Charity Steward needs to encourage brethren to make regular contributions to the East Lancashire Masonic Charity but in doing so he should not attempt to ‘bully' or embarrass members into giving. Rather, he should gently persuade brethren and help them put into perspective their charitable contributions. It is important that the Charity Steward takes into account the personal circumstances (where known) of brethren.
The ability to help brethren understand how these donations will be used and the purpose of all our Masonic Charities is a key influencer and the Charity Steward needs to have a good knowledge of what these are and their purpose.
Equally, keeping brethren informed of the application of funds and community projects will help to secure their continued commitment and support. It is important, therefore, that the Charity Steward keeps up to date with Provincial, District and local initiatives, successes, etc. and regularly communicate these to brethren.
