"If I had cleared the trees and drove the green, it would’ve been a great shot."
Chairman, Malcolm K Worsley, at the First Tee
The 2011 Derby Cup Golf Competion was held at Swinton Park Golf Course on a warm summer day which added to the enjoyment experienced by all taking part. Out on the course conditions were excellent. This year Masons played alongside invited non-Masons and Freemasons from other Provinces and a special prize was arranged for the winner amongst the visitors. This is the principal fixture on the Masonic golfing calendar and is open to members of a recognised golf club and who possess a bona fide handicap.
Evening Dinner
Following an excellent day's golf the brethren and guests assembled in the Clubhouse to enjoy a splendid evening meal before the speeches and prize giving ceremony. The Chairman of the East Lancashire Masonic Golf Society, WBro Malcolm K Worsley, PSGD, PAPGM, welcomed the President of the Society, the Provincial Grand Master, RWBro Jack Price. President, Jack Price (PGM) with the Chairman, Malcolm K Worsley Brother Price admitted to being a non-golfer, more by dint of circumstance than choice. He reflected that a wonderful day had been enjoyed by all and that it was a great pity that more hadn't been available to partake. We are still a large Province with many golfers; but not as big as previously. For many finances are not currently as good as they have been. With this in mind he had no doubt that the commitee, and those present today, would begin to think 'outside the box' to readdress arrangements to try and attract greater numbers in future years, "You are the guys who can make a difference. As for myself - I will give the Society and this Competition as much public support as possible. I will talk about it at Provincial Grand Lodge and we will support whatever needs to be done to help you to realise your vision for this competition." Then Jack thanked everyone for their good company, 'In the presence of friends. I am looking forward to the next one, take care, look after each other and God bless'. Prior to Jack's words Malcolm had introduced the Captain of Swinton Park Golf Club, Ernie Rimmer. Ernie welcomed all to Swinton Park and thanked the committee for his invitation today. He said it was good to see the East Lancashire Society at Swinton Park again and looked forward to entertaining them again in the future. Swinton Park Golf Course Captain - Ernie Rimmer
In conclusion Malcolm spoke of various initiatives aimed at improving attendance in the future. There had been 31 playing today compared with 39 last year, yet the Society had 107 members. In future years the aim was to have a greatly reduced fee for golf and dining and they hope to introduce some innovative changes to the competition. He commented how hard the Secretary, Alan Banks, works to promote and then administrate arrangements for the event, together with Bill O'Toole who does so much as well. Much support has also been given by Gerry Hodson who is helping Alan until he gets back to tip-top form. He thanked all for their attendance and the caterers for such a wonderful meal. Finally Malcolm reminded all about the Jimmy Hemsley Salver Competition to be held later in the year.
Then it was the Presidents special privilege to present the prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, with a special prize for highest score from the visitors. The Winner will be presented with the trophy formally at the Provincial Grand Lodge meeting in November 2011, together with members of his Lodge.
Prize Giving
The committee hope that as many eligible golfers as possible will endeavour to take part in this prestigious event in future years. Keep your eyes open for the announcement
of future venues and arrangements.
