'The Lost Symbols of Freemasonry'

A Presentation by the Brethren of Roses Lodge 5140

The Provincial Grand Officers Lodge of East Lancashire, No. 3747, met at Freemasons Hall, Bridge Street on 27th September, 2011.  The Worshipful Master, VWBro Harold Woodward, DepProvGM, conducted the Lodge business in his usual exemplary manner, before announcing that a presentation would be given by the Brethren of Roses Lodge, No. 5140, entitled “The Lost Symbols of Freemasonry”.

There followed a fascinating dialogue, illustrated by a Powerpoint presentation, on many of the Masonic symbols which were used in the 18thcentury. This was delivered by the WM of Roses Lodge, Bro John Wilkinson, in a clear and confident manner, while a number of junior brethren “modelled” aprons in various forms and styles, no mean feat in front of such a large gathering of senior officers from throughout the Province.

Whilst the movements on the floor were arranged by the DC, WBro Tony Cross, PPDepGReg, the credit for the original concept, together with a great deal of painstaking research, must go to WBro John Quinton, ably assisted by his brother WBro Paul Quinton, PPSGD. WBro Quinton was actually involved in an examination of a 1759 Ritual, when his work took him in a rather different direction.

The approbation of the Provincial Brethren at the conclusion of the presentation must have left both our Brothers with no doubt regarding the intense interest they had generated, enabling all present to make an advancement in their Masonic knowledge. Finally, grateful thanks must be extended to “our” APGM, WBro Martin Roche, both for his encouragement and his kind invitation to attend this prestigious Lodge.
