The Freemasons’ Grand Charity Grant Application Process
Any Freemason, past or present (under the United Grand Lodge of England) who is experiencing hardship may apply. The widows and certain other immediate dependants of the above may also apply.
Savings and income levels will be taken into account in assessing applications. The approximate level of income and savings below which a couple or a single person may be helped is:
Annual net income*: individual - £9,000 / Couple £13,500
* after payment of rent/mortgage, council tax, water rates and certain other expenses
Savings: Individual - £13,000 / Couple - £18,000
Where income and/or savings are slightly above the stated levels and there is still a case of need, contact with The Freemasons' Grand Charity is still encouraged.
Please note, The Freemasons' Grand Charity does not take into account the value of the applicant's home.
As a general guide, almost anyone who receives additional support from the state by way of Pension Credit or other means-tested benefit, is likely to be eligible - evidence must be provided.
Grants are not intended to replace available state benefits, which should be secured before an application is submitted.
How to apply
If you think you may be eligible you should contact your Lodge Almoner, Provincial Grand Almoner, or The Welfare Officer who will then guide you through the application process.
Please be aware that whilst Grand Charity staff are always happy to answer questions, applications can only be conducted via the Lodge or Provincial/District Grand Lodge.
Arrangements will be made to visit the applicant at home and to assist with the completion of an application form, including details of the applicant's financial circumstances. All visits and applications are dealt with in the strictest confidence and the privacy of the applicant is respected at all times.
Applications are considered at a monthly meeting at Grand Lodge of the Masonic Relief Grants Committee.
A decision is usually reached within 4-8 weeks of receipt of the application.
If approved, the grant will be paid to the applicant via the Lodge or Provincial/District Grand Lodge.
Repeat applications are strongly encouraged on an annual basis for as long as the need continues.
Applicants who have previously been declined are welcome to re-apply in the event of a change in their circumstances.
Applicants must not complete the application form themselves.
