Friends of Freemasons' Hall

Friends of Freemasons’ Hall

Bridge Street Manchester M3 3BT

Introduction
These notes will tell you why the “Friends” exist, what they have achieved since their foundation in 1979, what they do to-day to assist in the upkeep of the Headquarters of Freemasonry in East Lancashire and finally how to go about becoming a “Friend”.

Background
Since its completion in 1929, Freemasons’ Hall in Manchester has been the administrative headquarters of Freemasonry throughout East Lancashire. A number of Lodges and Chapters rent its facilities and currently there is a concerted effort to promote its use to commercial and other organisations with the objective of containing its administrative overheads. Notwithstanding the many Masonic meeting places throughout the Province to which brethren owe their own personal allegiances, Freemasons’ Hall in Manchester justifiably gains the admiration of all East Lancashire Masons as a building they are proud to claim as their own. The ‘Friends’ aim is to bring to the attention of all Masons their splendid headquarters, and to support it with material assistance.

Achievements
From its diverse activities the Friends have, over recent years, subscribed to the provision of an electric wheel chair for use within Freemasons’ Hall, carpeting, renewing or repairing furniture, redecorating, purchased organs and pianos and supplied computer hard and software

Activities
What do the “Friends” do? Well, they get together very informally at Freemasons’ Hall for luncheon at which they are sometimes entertained. Lifetime friendships are struck between brethren, their families and friends and ladies with Masonic connections from throughout the Province.
